Rome was great last night, as always. How come it's not the talk of LJ? We have all three episodes so far recorded in case anyone wants to catch up.

I don't know my Roman history very well, and so I don't know what happens - is it perverse of me to want to keep it that way for the duration of the series?

Well, it's the talk of -some- people's ljs... I missed part one, enjoyed part two, but had to go to bed early last night. Good things about Rome- I love the way the city looks, with convincing granduer and filth. Bad things- not enough fighting and too much 'soap opera'. As to what happens, there's a small Gallic village that refuses to surrender...

there's a small Gallic village that refuses to surrender...</i? Apparently next year we get a new film, Asterix and the Vikings (which I don't remember being one of the books, but I stopped reading around Magic Carpet) which actually doesn't look too bad.

Dunnno where the content in that went, apparently next year we get a new film, Asterix and the Vikings, which I don't remember being one of the books but I stopped reading after Magic Carpet.

It's, fortunately, animated, not live action like the rather dire last one. The film of Asterix in Briton wasn't too bad..

It's pretty obvious that, although the budget was huge for a TV show of any kind, they didn't have the resources for massed infantry battles, so seem to have kept it down to a bare minimum throughout the series so far (just seen episode eleven).

The vast majority of Pharsalus, for example, happens off camera, and episode is probably better for it. Do what they can do well rather than over-reach and end up looking comical.

In the end, Bob turns up in a posessed Kyle MacLachlan and murders everyone.

- Aidan (who really should get around to watching ep 2 and 3)

Cool. I avoid almost all TV (Buffy is the only TV I've watched in years), but a good program about ancient Rome sounds right up my street. May [livejournal.com profile] some_fox and I borrow it this weekend?

Tempted to borrow it. It's on earlier than I tend to get home and ready to watch TV, I think.

Still, I've given up on Lost - it just went *so* slowly and spelt everything out so much, even though I stuck through 8-9 episodes and really wanted to like it - so I've got time now.

I've started watching Lost Season 2 from downloads. I'd recommend having another go when that starts airing over here - it's much better than Season 1. It might even be worth watching the last three or four episodes of Season 1 just to get into it in time for Season 2.

I found a site with detailed writeups of each episode, so I now know what happens up to Season 2 Ep 5...

I'm on episode eleven, and one of the delights has been knowing exactly how things turn out, and seeing them put the dramatic elements in place to get there.

If you're interested, my friend Pen, who's a researcher in such things, has had some interesting things to say about Rome..

Enjoying it muchly, myself.

Like H, I'm more into this than I was with Lost.

The only thing that doesn't work for me is opening titles and the music. A small quibble I know.

The rest of the series looks very promising, with lots of decadent perversity and bloody.

I saw the first episode and wasn't that blown away TBH. I'd watch it if there was nothing else on, but ISTR it's on at the same time as Grand Designs so that'd probably get priority if I happened to feel like TV at the time.

There's a repeat at some point in the week though (I like Grand Designs too...)

Ta.

I should probably watch another episode to give it a fair hearing. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Apart from the phrase "Alright Brutus, me old cock?", which stunned me too stunnedly for me to laugh, I think Rome rocks!

Nice to see Tommy over his toxoplasmosis/death and being all surly in a uniform as well.

I sadly missed the first two episodes of Rome, but caught it last night. Hopefully they'll bring it out on a DVD boxset so I can buy it immediately. It rocks & rules.

How come it's not the talk of LJ?

It is, but seemingly only from Americans. Perhaps that's because they're further along in the series or because they generally have less good shows to watch?

is it perverse of me to want to keep it that way for the duration of the series?

Nope. No spoilers if you don't know the history or academic angst when they get something wrong. ;>

I'm thoroughly enjoying Rome. It took me the first two episodes to really get into it but I can't wait for the fourth now.

Spoilers for reality. It's an interesting thought.

This is definitely on my mean-to-watch list, and yet somehow I never do. Digital television hates me.

I really enjoyed the first episode, but work and other commitments mean I've not had a chance to see the last two :/

(This really should be incentive to set up the hard disk recorder in the new place.)

I was really impressed with how well it's been done.

it has me interested so much

Ha, this reminds me of the time a woman who worked for HBO asked me if I was going to tune in for the second half of a mini-series they were running. (Note I don't have cable so I can't possibly watch HBO at home.)"No," I answered,"I'm actually pretty clear about what happens to Romeo and Juliet in the second half of the story, so I think I feel pretty free to pass on it."

However, I might enjoy watching this series. Hold me a spot on the couch for later?
