I must buy champagne and popcorn. Champagne, of course, for November 4th, when (barring either a major event between now and then or electoral fraud on a scale I think even the Republicans would find hard to pull off) Barack Obama will be elected the 44th President of the United States.

But popcorn for the upcoming bloody civil war within the GOP! There's plenty to say about this, but this is worth a giggle. Right Wing News emailed more than 240 right-of-center bloggers and asked them to answer questions about the election. 76 blogs responded.
October 27, 2008

1) Who do you think is going to win the election?

A) John McCain: 53% (39)
B) Barack Obama: 47% (34)

2) Do you think Sarah Palin has been a plus or a minus to the ticket?

A) Minus: 9% (7)
B) Plus: 91% (68)

3) How do you feel about Sarah Palin as a candidate?

A) I really like her!: 80% (61)
B) She's so-so.: 12% (9)
C) I'm not a big fan!: 8% (6)

4) The Republican Party did poorly in the 2006 election and even if McCain wins is on track to do poorly again in this year's Congressional races. If you had to choose between these two options, do you think that's because they were...

A) Too conservative: 9% (7)
B) Not conservative enough: 91% (67)

You left out one of the questions...

5) Are you a brainless tonk with all the political awareness of a six week old marshmallow?

A) er, yes. 21% (26)
B) Absolutely! 7% (9)
C) ooh look everyone, a giraffe...oh, no it isn't, it's a cloud! 72% (89)

WA HA HA HA HA HA HA

Though seriously, man is maintaining perspective is hard this year. I got comfortable with the presidential race, and then the senate races look like they're doing okay... so now I'm freaking out and getting up at 5am on Tuesday to help the No on 8 folks in *that* generational fight. This #$@ just doesn't stop, and I have no idea how I'll feel next week if we win some and lose others...

I'm not actually a big supporter of lobbying for gay marriage - I think we should be making more radical demands - but having got it, there's no way I want to see these fucktards roll it back with bigotry and lies. So a big thanks to you and everyone else fighting this crap!

And seriously, there are reasons to be cheerful. After their crushing defeat in 1997 the Tories spent over a decade in the wildeness, lost, riven with civil war. A similar fate now awaits the GOP and I just can't wait!

I bet there were some Democrats saying they'd have the Presidency for a generation in 1976...

And I bet there were some Labour supporters who said they'd hold Downing Street for at least three terms after 1997.

Indeed, indeed.

It helps that our PMs have powers their presidents would love to have though.

Oh, for sure, but holding the White House and Congress and the Senate is a good start. What I'm really going to be on the edge of my seat for is a 60-seat majority in the Senate...

Senate after the 1976 elections: 61 Dems, 38 Reps

House of Representatives after the 1976 elections: 292 Dems, 143 Reps

:)

Today, it's apparently effectively 51 vs 49 and 235 vs 199...

Not sure what you mean there -- maybe I am blinded and cannot see what's more radical in this particular area than gay marriage. (Abolishing state regulated marriage entirely?) Also, Gavin Newsome is really kind of a jerk for setting off this whole thing. But maybe it'll work out... *crossed fingers*

I don't understand 2, 3 and 4 together. For 2B and 3A to be such a popular combination means that these bloggers have an awareness that what they like and what the electorate likes can be very different. So why 4A? What's wrong with these people?

You're misreading, I think - 2B is the "she's a plus" option. They like her, they think the electorate like her, and if only all their candidates could be like her they'd sweep to victory everywhere.

I totally can't read. Got up too early this morning, not enough caffeine.

So wow, they really are out of touch. OTOH this makes Palin 2012 more likely. Buy popcorn futures now.

Wow, I find that damn scary, actually! I mean, for germany even the US left wing is at most somwhere in the middle or slight right of middle of the german political spectrum...

Of course, asking the bloggers means that you're asking the most fanatical supporters of the party; they're likely not to be representative of Republican voters or even of the Republican party.

It says that they're centre right bloggers, not republican supporters.

4B - "not conservative enough" is not *that* unreasonable, given that the expansion of the federal government under Bush (bank bailout, Department of Homeland Security) and vastly increased budget deficits can be characterised as unconservative.

What I expect they mean is that a more conservative Republican message would be a simpler message, and thus an easier sell. It's not *completely* batshit insane...
