Good BU

Was great to see lots of lovely people at BU last night, and to get trounced at that dice game. It would be interesting to play a variant in which each mistake gains you a die and you're out when you get a sixth. Very good to see [livejournal.com profile] ajva, of whom I don't see nearly enough.

Don't really have time for a full roll call, sorry!

I thought when I got a camera phone that it would be useful for taking covert photos on the street and the Tube, but all my experimentation so far has failed to produce a decent photo. To get even acceptable quality you have to get close up, aim carefully, and hold the camera steady, all of which makes it very obvious you're taking a photo...

Update: While the pack says "perudo", the game seems to be more commonly known online as Dudo.

A PowerShot S400 is pretty good for street photography. You can sit or stand and look at it as if examining the photos, and point it in the right direction and get off a shot when the moment is right. The zoom lens helps, and you can turn off the shutter noise and the flash. It's small enough and rectangular enough that it doesn't seem to trigger the "camera" reflex in passers by.

Great to see you too, babe!

Re: perudo. Interestingly, there is an advanced rule which I have sometimes played, where any player can call out "calza" after someone has made a call, to mean: "I think there are *exactly* that number of Xs on the table". If they're right, they get to reclaim one dead die from the bag. (I don't think you can do it during the palafico rounds, though - need to check up the rules.) Maybe we should play that rule next time. :o)

What I mean is, as it stands the player closest to the winning conditions is also the one with the greatest advantage in each round. In Diplomacy, this causes all the other playerse to gang up on the winner, but it's hard to gang up on people in Perudo. It would be interesting if it were negative rather than positive feedback, so the player closest to winning had the greatest disadvantage to contend with.
