Just heard from work - they want a medical certificate for my week of illness. Trouble is I'm in London, and I'm not registered with a GP here. What's the best way to find a GP pronto to get seen for a certificate?

Update: I'm still ill, though recovering pretty well now. I may be well enough to work by tomorrow, but I expect I'll still be able to produce enough barrels of mucus to satisfy any GP that I was Not A Well Bunny...

Ring the NHS Direct on 0845 4647, they can give you advice. Although I'm new here, I did notice a poster in the GP clinic last week that under UK aw, you can self certify for an illness that keeps you away from work for up to 7 days, but there's a special form you need to fill in. Good luck!

1) Something like a MediCentre (Victoria, Waterloo, Euston stations, possibly others) - costs about £30.
2) Go into any GP with your NHS number and say "I need to see a GP as a transient patient" - they have to see you, but you might struggle to get an appointment.

NHS Direct should be able to help - they'll probably have a list of drop-in centres too.

as everyone mentioned.. try NHS Direct. But good luck as when I last moved in London I needed an appointment and couldnt get one quickly. They all wanted to do a medical first.. total nightmare!

can't you just go to a gp in your area and switch? if you have your nhs card from your old doctor they should be able to switch you easily..

It's possible to book an emergency appointment with any surgery in Scotland without telling them why, but they're liable to be annoyed if it turns out that you're not currently ill. It's also possible to go along to the surgery at which your housemate is registered if you're staying somewhere temporarily, they'll see you as a "temporary resident", but I don't know if they give out certificates to such folk. Kitty's GP is required to see you, AFAIAA.

HTH, seeya soon

*nods* I know I've been seen as a temporary resident when I've needed a doctor or lost my medication away from home. Not all surgeries willdo it, but they will all have details of places in your area that will.
Don't know about doing it just to get a doctor's note - if you weren't seen by a doctor while you were ill, your work will likely argue that you can't have been ill enough not to have been working.

In either case, get yourself registered with a doctor in London - you're there as much as you're in Edinburgh, and if you're planning to move permanently to London in any case in the near future, it makes sense.

Heh. I've been trying for 2 years to get registered with a GP in London. No luck so far. Nobody taking on new patients. But if you go to nhsdirect, get a list of gp's in the area, and call them up, they'll most likely be able to see you as a one-off if its an emergency even though you're not registered with them.

If you call your local health authority, they will put you on the list of a GP in your area whether the GP likes it or not - I've had to do that twice since moving to London. At least, that's certainly supposed to happen - if it isn't working then I suggest your MP!

Course, having a GP doesn't mean you'll be seen within a fortnight. And they wonder why people go to A&E...

interesting.
I will be getting a GP as top priority when I get to London otherwise I will die. I need regular prescriptions and annual reassessments. I doubt they're allowed to say 'no, not taking new patients' in the face of that.

Under the NHS everyone is entitled to register with a doctor - may not necessarily be the surgery closest to your house, or your first choice, but a doctor within easy reach of your home has to take you.

Am sorry to hear you're not well : (. When I have been away from my surgery before, I have gone to the nearest one to where I'm residing and gone to the emergency surgery. You'd need to make your request for a cert there. They should oblige you (although you'd probs have to pay a fee for it).
