Nonetheless, the whole affair has my hackles up: not being from the UK, I was a little curious about the game, and the discourse and discussion of rules was being propagated by people I had found through personal discussion to be 'intelligent'. Of course, when otherwise intelligent people pretend to be intelligent about nonesense, those 'not in the know' are needlessly misled. Yes, grand fun mind game, but non-consensual.
I caught on it was a joke somewhat quickly: after playing an online version and discovering I could win immediately by picking "mornington crescent". You can fool some of the people all of the time, but I don't think it makes you any more evolved of a person, as some (ex) posters suggest.
An intellectual discourse of nonsense lowers the value of the intellectual, IMO. If you play in feces, you wind up smelling bad.
