Trying to read this since there seems to be a bit of an FB exodus going on, but it seems I can't "like" your posts. I would like to "like" them. I don't really have something to say, I just want to say "hello, I am your friend, and I actually read your thing, and it is indeed amusing/sad/commendable/surprising/infuriating just as you say" I guess Dreamwidth has basically not changed in the last decade or so?

(if you agree but have nothing in particular to add, please feel free to reply "like")

Hello! I skimmed FB for the first time in ages (a friend has recently died, some stuff is only there) and noticed the exodusing and wondered where people would go...

It is nice to see your pixels and I hope you are keeping well. I had something to add, so I didn't just type "like" but I do relate to the wanting to react "I have read this" which is very 2020s... Phone-centric internets but yay.

Kim my partner is on a shinier Fediverse (?Sharki I think) platform and not only can she like but unlike standard Mastodon she can react with any of the emoji in her instance's set which shows as a plain like to those without that capability. Which means I don't know when she's made a sarcastic react cos I'm on a less techie instance. I must admit i like the emoji as reacts and do often use them in WhatsApp and Slack.

I think that reacts help keep the feeling going that there are people out there. Getting 35 hug reacts to a sad post is so much better than getting nothing at all.

I should probably post here occasionally myself, but I don't really have anything to say.

It works both ways - if there are 'likes' and someone posts that their foo has bar-ed, there is pressure to press the :) or :( or.. button as appropriate.

It's a really interesting technical difference - it really makes it feel like we have to just ... decide to be okay with yelling into a void, when we use Dreamwidth. Yes, sometimes there's a response, but usually there's nothing.

And, like ... I dunno, I think it can still work, sort of? Like, with the expectation of feedback gone, there's one motivation gone, but if other motivations are strong enough, we have sometimes posted. It's just very different, and we're kinda left guessing whether anyone is seeing it.

...unless we link it on fedi or something and get a bunch of likes to our link.

Sorry, we're kinda just rambling. We thought it was an interesting difference.

It's weird, isn't it? Literally nothing appears to have changed since we were last here.
