I'm considering signing up with the Cryonics Institute. Are you signed up? I'd be interested to hear your reasons why or why not. It does of course sound crazy, but when you press past that initial reaction to find out why it's crazy, I haven't heard a really satisfactory argument yet, and I'm interested to hear what people think. There are many reasons it might not work, but are there reasons to think it's really unlikely to work? How likely does recovery need to be for it to be worth it?

Looking at Google Scholar, a lot of them look to be well outside the field: that list is exactly on all fours with lists of "scientists" (usually engineers, actually) published by intelligent designers or AGW denialists....

Such letters are not very convincing in general, but it's in reply to [livejournal.com profile] palmer1984's question. Merkle and Minsky at least are big hitters.

With AGW and creationism, there are corresponding letters the other way - eg the "Steves". If you can point me at anything similar for cryonics - or indeed any kind of opposition that is clearly more carefully thought out than the usual kind of "I've just heard of this and given it five minute thought" kind of blog post that you sometimes see - I would be grateful.
