Update: as is often the case with these things, it was dramatically unpleasant but thankfully brief. I feel almost OK, I've ate a banana a few hours ago without problems and I'm now eating another. Thanks to Graydon Hoare and Nathaniel Smith for sorting out an emergency care package!
