Where's the best place in London to shop for

  • a pair of cheap, real Army surplus combats
  • plain black lycra leggings
  • a long leather coat, under GBP 200?
Network switches arrived - there's an indefinite delay on Lili's new graphics card, so I asked for the switches to be delivered seperately. I have taken some spare cables at work - the price was that I learn how to make up network cables, a skill I was very happy to acquire (OW-O-GW-B-BW-G-NW-N). So network games ahoy! I think we have plans for other sorts of games tonight though :-)

Back to mine tonight - even though the washing machine now works in Streatham, there's a bit of a backlog. And I want to pick up some clothes.

In answer to your shopping question, Camden springs to mind. There's an army surplus place in the arches in the main market, near all the "vintage" clothing places. Ash got a pair of German army paratrooper boots there for £15, and they had loads of clothing. As for the leggings, I would almost suggest the "vintage" shops there as well, since they tend to carry a lot of 80s gear. I know there was a big sale on leather trousers in the market in the Ballroom, but I don't know if there were any long coats.

Laurence Corner near Euston for the combats.

Have a look at the leather shops along Brick Lane if you haven't already. I found Xile quite good (and very helpful) in particular.

My first jacket was Xile, from when they had an outlet in Ken market. My current one is from some other random shop on Brick Lane - best to walk up and down to find the best price - there's no shortage of places. Some claim to do wholesale only but most do retail. Much cheaper and better quality than anything in Camden.

For the jacket, the shops opposite Camden tube. I got mine in one of them (I can't remember which, there are two or three) for GBP130 and I like it. It's been fairly durable so far, though it is made of light leather so wouldn't survive great abuse. I got it in high summer (June, wasn't planning to get one but happened to go shopping), the prices are lower then. I was the only person buying in the shop for the 30 mins or so I poked at jackets :)

For the combats, try the British Boot Company in Camden? They know their stuff and have a large selection.

If you're after leggings have you thought about trying a dancewear suppliers?

I've just got this really bad image of Paul starring in a remake of Grease...

Hehe! It's a good point though - when I last looked for leggings I couldn't find them anywhere, even at markets you'd expect to find them. I remember when I was younger you couldn't move in department stores for '3 for a tenner' black leggings! Anyway, that's no longer the case, so a dance-wear supplier might be best. Also, they'll be shiney, which is probably [personal profile] ciphergoth's preference...

Isn't it wierd that they have disappeared so completely? I was looking for leggings in the shop a few months back. Had to give up and beg some offa my mum in the end.

Almost all my leather coats and jackets have come from the Petticoat Lane area. I've been very happy with all of them, for price and quality. The traders like to haggle a bit, which I find fairly difficult to cope with, so I usually take my dad along who finds this an incredibly entertaining game and takes care of that bit for me :)
