Parts of Manchester offline, off phones due to fire

A fire in a cabling tunnel has destroyed 130,000 lines used by homes and businesses. I don't know whether it might also affect ground cables for mobile comms.

Most of the damage iirc was on the south side of Manchester so areas comprising Stockport, Cheadle and out almost as far as Macclesfield. The part of Greater Manchester that I come from. I don't know if anyone I know was affected cos I don't use phones anyway, I believe kingginger had his mobile, work phone and possible home phone off for a number of hours tho...

Kinda scary how easily whole chunks of people were crippled by it.

it involved esbat and I in a trip to macclesfield to look at a bike that had already been sold, because we couldn't get through on the phone to check.
