I got the network working last night. Hurrah! I found the PDF specs for my ultra-cheap switches just now, and they are really rather good - I can't believe they're under GBP 15 each! I've come to the conclusion that most of my cables are shit - this makes sense since they are mostly yoinked from spares boxes in offices, and there's selection pressure for all the good cables in such boxes to go first. More cables needed. The hardware on my laptop isn't fucked (thankfully) and so I'll soon be reading LJ on the roof terrace - rah rah rah!

The flat is a bomb site while we move things around, but it will all look great soon, I'm sure of it. The agency want to send cleaners around, but I've told them to wait a week or so so we can get the flat in a state such that it's worth the bother.

I want to book Men with Ven on Sunday. Does anyone have any recommendations in South-West London? Or shall I just look for a card in the window of a newsagents?

No recommendations, but presumably Scoot, Yell and/or upmystreet.com will have lists - perhaps more reputable companies than the card-in-newsagent people.

I can't remember who we used, and anyway they probably stole Simon's PS1 so I wouldn't recommend them anyway.

How many cables of what sort of length do you need?

Both flats *totally* trashed. Maybe we should just set fire to everything and go for minimalist decor throughout :)

Where are you getting these switches from?

Dabs! They're "Dabs Value Switches". I half-expected them to arrive with blue-and-white stripes on them :-)

Very nice!

Before I forward it around the office - suggest leaving a white margin to the left and the right of the main text box, so it doesn't look so horizontally stretched...

No, I've only ever made one cable myself and that's in use in the office. I plan to make more but I need to find somewhere cheap to buy a reel of CAT-5 and some ends...

For Cat5 cables etc. www.screwfix.com is your friend .. :)

Alternatively B&Q (www.diy.com) have reasonable-ish prices
if you prefer not to wait for mail order stuff to arrive.

If you can make cables at the office you probably already
have all the necessary crimping and stripping tools.

I'd certainly recommend finding and using a cheap 8-led Cat5
cable tester to check the cables you make -- nothing more is
needed for making good cables these days.

By the way, if you're also considering a van-without-a-man
(e.g. just a plain van hire) then Practical in East Sheen
(nr. Mortlake BR station) were good for me (a couple of
years ago, though). If you're looking for a weekday hire
they'll be fine. If you're after a hire that includes a
weekend or a friday be warned that they'll be reluctant to
hire for less than 2 1/2 or 3 full days. That said, their
vans are good and, if you're into such things, have been used
for such occasions as driving stuff to Irish castles for
Madonna's wedding! (Was that the one in that castle where the
old guy who owned it let the beans out of the bag? Cos that's
the wedding I'm thinking of.)

PS Wish I could find an unused username i like. Being
"anonymous" suchs! :(

This would help most if I could drive...

As for usernames - I recommend choosing something you can stand and earmarking the $15 to rename your account when the right name strikes you. Then your posts won't be automatically screened...
