Lemon cake break

Both upstairs and downstairs houses are now, approximately, chaos. Many of the landlord's things are in boxes, ready to be put into storage; I'm thinking of Sunday for hiring the Man with Van, but haven't got around to it yet. (Can anyone recommend one?) I managed to buy Allen keys to finish the job of taking the bed that used to be in Jess's room apart, so that's going downstairs in a bit. I now need to unscrew some more furniture from the wall so it can go downstairs. I'm feeling most optimistic about the way this flat is going to look when we've finished.

I've nailed a crossover cable to the side of the stairwell, but weirdly I get high packet loss when I use it to daisychain the switches together; I'm currently cheating by using it to connec Jess's PC direct to the Linux router and that works fine. No, I didn't put the nails straight through the cable.

duplex misnegotiation? (or perhaps 'auto-crossover' gone mad)

I'd almost suspect an electrical line or some such somewhere in the wall near where you're passing the cable -- something that might generate enough of an electromagnetic field to create some interference.
