I am sitting on a train from Waterloo to Wimbledon, to meet Jess from work. Update for anyone not living in the UK: it is fucking hot. And humid, too. We are all starting to dread what August will be like.

Readers may have noticed a flurry of posts to [livejournal.com profile] cipher_photo today. I'm having fun. I'm now constantly scanning for things to photograph, and I've practised how fast I can get my phone out and take a photograph. I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] spikeylady's mick-taking is right, and I'll soon be evaluating phones on how good the camera is and whether it has a flash - except of course that the Treo 600 is the only Palm-based cameraphone, and they are apparently in short supply, so I won't be letting go of this one any time soon.

I still think the cameraphone is essentially a crazy idea, driven by a solution looking for a problem rather than any natural technological convergence. I have only once tried to send a "picture message" - a weird idea. But frankly, put any old gimmick in something I have with me all the time and I'm likely to see what use I can put it to.

I had an idea today and I thought I should describe it here in case it's original - general patent-warding practice. But that will have to wait until tomorrow morning...

One thing about camera phones is that you'll have your phone with you anyway, so you'll have a camera with you. Not necessarily a great camera but a camera.

One major problem with camera phones is that for most of them the camera is integral, and it's often easy to take pictures on the sly.

It's not unusual to find places that ban cameras (particularly semisecure facilities), and a lot of secure facilities insist that cellphones be turned off (or ban them). But now there's a growing number of recreational places that ban cellphones because of the growing number of them with cameras. It first hit the news around a year ago, when a health club frequented by the rich and famous banned camera phones. But D.C.'s BDSM organization has banned all cell phones from its functions.

I'm torn on this one. I didn't want a camera phone. I'd understand if an SM club didn't want me to carry mine. But I'd be absolutely bereft to have it take off me.

Perhaps they'll start running mobile phone creches like a swish restaurant I went to I while back. They had a shelf in the cloakroom with mobiles lined up on their raffle tickets.

That was the restaurant Conflux and I went to to celebrate my decision to quit my PhD. Haven't times moved on! :)
