A flat in London?

As I mentioned in an earlier LJ entry, it looks like bootpunk is going to need the room I'm now living in before the end of the year, so I'm looking for somewhere new in London to live before then.

• I want to share a flat, is anyone else looking for a flat share?
• Where in London should I live?
• How much rent should I expect to pay? Update I think the £100pw cost of that Tooting flat is about the limit of what I'd want to try and pay.

I want to live near Lisa and Lili, who live very near Streatham station. But I'd also prefer to live somewhere that was on the Tube so I can get into London more easily. One possibility is this flat as mentioned in Howard's journal. It has the huge advantage of being about fifteen minutes walk from Lisa and Lili. But from what he says I'd have to move out again in a year. Alternatively, Brixton has been suggested as a good place to live, handy for the bus to Streatham but also for the Victoria line which takes me rapidly into London and on to the burgeoning bisexual ghetto in Walthamstow. julietk has told me I should live in Bermondsey, which is apparently cheap and handy for London Bridge which has frequent trains to Streatham. Thoughts, ideas?

*laughs lots* well i'm going to start looking for somewhere to live in London on Monday (after my finals), but £200pw is pretty much twice what i'm hoping to be able to afford. i wish you good luck in your search for a flatmate :)

It's a 2 bedroom flat, so you'd be paying £100 a week, roughly what you're hoping to afford, no?

*blinks* oh i see, sorry, thought it was £200 each (i have lots to learn.)

£100pw would be about right, yes; i'm doubting that i could pay more, and doubting i could find anywhere for less, that would actually be habitable.

ideally i'd prefer a place to myself, but i'm not sure how realistic that is. like i said, shan't start looking 'til next week when the exams are over.

I'd imagine it wouldn't be exactly 100 quid each, though, 'cos one of the rooms is a double, and the other is a single, so you'd have to split the rent to account for that. In my experience (of Edinburgh, not London, admittedly) rent works on a roughly linear scale, i.e. X pounds per room, where X varies by size of room, location of flat, etc, plus an extra (also variable) amount to account for communal space, so living alone is much more expensive than sharing; sometimes as much as twice as expensive.

*nods* that's what i'm afraid of; but i still want to see if i can find anywhere. there's been a few studio flats around E11 that've been £110 or £125pw including bills, and things. i'm crossing my fingers, but please tell me if i'm being unrealistically optimistic :)

It can't hurt to try; there are some amazing bargains to be had, flat-wise, you just have to look hard and be a little lucky.

My daughter rents a nice, but small, studio flat ie combined bedroom/livingroom, own kitchen, own bathroom in Elephant and Castle for 350 pcm.
