LJ meetup in the Filmhouse is today 8pm, see you there!

Apparently I'm Palm OS (quiz). I've moved this to the top since it's the only part of this article that's attracted any comment. Pah.

At first I was pleased that my cutting edge browser supports that fine, free standard for animated images - MNG - as well as the much-less-capable animated GIFs.

Then I remembered that I'd only switch animation off anyway.

Then I remembered that I'd never switched animation on before trying the MNG tests, and got pissed off that it animated them anyway! Maybe it's a cunning tactic to encourage people to use the new file format, and they'll make Galeon honour the "Never animate images" flag for MNG files as well once they're popular.

Washing machine delivered, but the old broken one is still plumbed in. Oven replaced, but the new one is still in its box; I don't feel like dealing with it just now. New phone fiddled with but no further. Started chasing up laptop at 9am; why wait until the delivery deadline has passed to hear, as I inevitably did, that it won't arrive today?

That screenshot was of Solaris. I work with HP-UX and it is just another version of UNIX, solid and dependable but a bit short on user friendliness. Once you have put the GNU tools on it then as far a dev goes it's just like Linux.

Well, we had CDE on HP-UX so ner. And I thought it was something Anne could relate to a bit more than the differences between sh and bash so double ner.

I've never understood why HP do this. They sell machines at really cut down prices so that Uni's will have them. Maybe HP think that lots of students will leave saying "yes I want a HP-UX machine" when they start work. But what actually happens is that the the first thing the Uni does is put someone else's software on them to make them usable. I've even heard of HP-UX being wiped completely in favour of Linux.

Anyway, for all you know Anne might be desperate to know the differences between bash, sh and ksh and is just gagging to hear about HP-UX process scheduling strategies. Well it could happen.

yeah, once you replace everything except the kernel with the GNU system you end up with the GNU system, but with an inferior kernel...

I used HP-UX as it shipped and hated it more than I've ever hated any other UNIX. I can't think of a good word to say about it.

How about, "it's not AIX". Zombie process anyone?
