Television

I am currently listening to Television, "Marquee Moon", which I bought on a whim because it was cheap and lots of folks speak well of Television. Not totally convinced yet; I'd somehow gained the impression it might be a bit like Magazine, but it could be the one-word multisyllabic consumer product connection.

[livejournal.com profile] sibelian's hard drive is dying. If I buy a replacement, will we have to do a complete re-install of Windows and all software, or is there a way of copying everying across so that his setup is preserved? How hard is it? This is assuming that the replacement isn't precisely the same size as the original, but bearing in mind that he's only used about 7GB of a 40GB drive.

I received a tax demand today. For around £26,000. I hot-footed it to my accountant, who assures me that it's quite impossible that I could owe that much, and that the IR are simply trying to get my attention so I submit a proper tax thingy. May I add that they succeeded in getting my attention. She's sorting it out so we know how much I really do owe them. She's working this weekend, so I've offered to bring coffee and buns...

I'm waiting to hear from her how much she thinks I'm going to need to pay before I commit to FSE 2003 or Morecambe. Morecambe is looking a bit less likely ATM because I probably need to be in London over the end of Feb/start of March period. [livejournal.com profile] coracaskia, I'll just have to make time to visit you some weekend anyway - I keep forgetting how relatively nearby you are!

I have still to hear from my work authorising the purchase of a laptop. Since there's not a lot I can do in the way of work without one you'd think they'd get around to it. Sent a *poke* email today, no response.

Today we have a meeting to wind up the housing co-op we started four years ago. The reasons why it never got off the ground are complex and painful, but we haven't been doing the few statutory things we're supposed to do as directors of what is legally a limited company, so seeing it all closed off legal like will be a great relief; it's been one of those 3am worries for a long time. We're all going to the pub afterwards as a sort of wake, and thence to a party.

Now to burn a CD of pictures of Mir for [livejournal.com profile] nik_strychnine, who's painting us a model of it...

And save live music for us while you're there, will you?

Update: no party tonight - spread the word

... Do you have any other windows boxes in your house with a NIC in em??

If so... I could recommend using ghost - you can even use ghost on a HD channel to HD channel copy aswell...

Errm - You can probably get it from Kazaa

You can also get Diskcopy - I would have the CD to hand - but its in work - will have a look Monday if you haven't P2P'd a connection by then...

How old's the hard drive on the thing?? 40 gig must be fairly recent, and definatly worth a warranty check...

I will try and find a copy of ghost for you in the mean time - the problem is getting it to you might just be simpler to download your own copy...

(either Ghost personal, or Ghost Enterprise will do you no worries).

Ahh - found Ghost v6...

Can you handle a 5 meg zip file?

(I can also give you a hand via an IM or something should you so need aswell).

Laterz

You want a copy of Ghost or Drive Image. I now prefer the latter as its writing direct to CD-R actually works! But they both do the same thing - write an image of the contents of a partition / the whole drive to another partition / drive / image file. They take care of different size destinations automatically. If you can have both drives in the PC at the same time, it's also extremely fast.

Yep, the IR did that to me once. It works, doesn't it? I think they think of the highest number it could possibly be...

LOL

Did it work??

Tends to work with our Maxtors at work that are about a year or two old.

We just bounce the machine round in its security case, and voila... Keeps going for a bit...

I know we ought to phone Dell to get them replaced... But...

LOL

Pah, ignore the IR, all procedure and no substance. If for some inexplicable reason it happens to be a past payroll fuck up then give me a shout, and you can probably palm the blame off elsewhere.

My accountant has reassured me she'll be asking for much less when she's finished with them, don't worry!

Thanks! btw am busy both Thursday and Friday nights, although I'm tempted to try and make the EB on Friday night, depending...
