I've got a book by Searle. Strangely, on most matters he seemed fairly sane.

Hm. Perhaps. And yet he can't see the howling hole in his "Chinese Room" argument, even when it's pointed out quite clearly to him.

A specific blind spot, maybe. Or perhaps I judged his book badly. I did expect to disagree with the non-consciousness chapters a lot more than I did.

Agh, punning titles! I've no idea if it's going to be a lecture about the future of philosophy in ages to come, or about 'Future' in philosophy of ages past and present!

Do you know how long it goes on for?

John Searle's left foot cannot understand English. A small cube of flesh from John Searle's diced brain cannot understand English. John Searle's severed ears cannot understand English. John Searle's pre-frontal lobe cannot understand English. John Searle's right testicle cannot understand English. Iterating over every small piece of John Searle's body, we see that no small part of the complex biological system known as "John Searle" can actually understand English. Therefore John Searle cannot understand English, and there's no point going to listen to him give a lecture. QED.

Since when has a lecturer been required to understand anything? ;)

I want to join in this discussion of his credibility :)

we should talk about that question you asked of him - good question, and of course one he's gonna have heard before - and the inadequacies of his answer. See you in the pub tomorrow, probably.

I'm angry with myself for fucking up the question: I should have started with "You misrepresent the position of strong AI so deeply it's barely even caricature"...

hmm. yeah. I resent the way he's so confident that he's right, when the debate is still on-going, and probably will be for some time.

Sounds boring

I was very inimpressed by his "Chinese Room" non-arguments, so I'm not tempted just now.

Damn. I wish I had read LJ earlier; I would've liked to have gone to that. How was it?
