I am going to the pub tonight even though I travel to Whitby tomorrow. Might as well start the drinking marathon early...

A story for the 21st century: we were having coffee in the Elephant House on George IV Bridge on Saturday when I overheard a conversation on the next table.
- "I'm going to have to change my ring tone before I see my folks"
- "Why's that?"
- "Well, my Dad gave me a ringtone for my birthday, and... you know how it is, like when your folks give you a sweater..."
I've started saving up links I want to propogate to put in one big post, rather than making lots of little posts. I was in the middle of doing this when I had to reach around the back of my computer; I accidentally jiggled the lead of my PS/2 mouse, and of course that makes it stop functioning until you reboot the computer. Of course. WHOSE FUCKING STUPID IDEA WAS THAT? I found I could submit the post using only the keyboard, but I could not make it private without the mouse. I made it private later (after fighting with network troubles following the reboot). Here are the same links (and more), presented more presentably.

Overheard conversations

I walked past two people on the way home from work who were saying

"It's note really worth bothering, because they could keel over and die tomorrow."

which made me very curious. A few weeks ago some people saying

"Kind of cold, kind of remote, sort of apple flavoured, but not really the sort of thing you'd expect in B&Q".
and a bus driver talking to an inspector who had just hitched a ride

"I guess the Normans gave us the doomsday book, but I wonder as to the extent that was a real step forward in government, rather than merely a step toward the situation we find ourselves in now."

to which the inspector replied

"of course King Alfred ... ooh this is my stop" and got off.
It's odd to think that there's an extended conversation about the early political history of Britain in three minute chunks moving around Cambridge on bus routes.
