There reply is strange to say the least, just for the benefit of anyone else interested in the project I'll quickly say why:
Leather will survive water/washign quite happliy if treated properly I have a trench coat and numerous boots to proof this /* gloves and such survive the washign machine and are a lot happier after a bit of leather cream */ Ok don't soak in the bath but hardly a major problem.
Non-leather might survive for longer, a plastic or leatherette would be an option. Cloth certainly, though I thing having a thickish cloth collar drying out around your neck would be far more unpleasant.
