Well, actually it normally vibrates, so it won't pass from funny to irritating quite as quickly as usual. The problem with ring tones is that they sound too alike, and you get everyone looking to their phone when one rings.
However I have some sympathy with your position - tunes can be very irritating as alerts. The road crossing near MM21 in Yokohama, Japan that played a cheery tune when it was time to cross freaked me out, and that little ditty that reversing vehicles play is infuriating. What we need is a greater variety of tuneless chirps. I'll probably tire of the Nick Cave soon...
