Another diary-type entry full of the excitement that is our lives at the moment.

We are so busy just now! Spent yesterday installing new washing machine, which involved drilling a HUGE HOLE with one of those huge hole drilling things and was very exciting and satisfying and went well. Sadly the waste water pump on the washing machine we have been gifted appears to be dead, so we have to decide what to do about that. There's still loads to do on the house, but we're getting there slowly - we've also fitted the sliding mirror doors onto [livejournal.com profile] spikeylady's new double wardrobe, it wasn't too hard and they're cool. All the zillions of folk who said "get an electric screwdriver" - you were so right. [livejournal.com profile] asrana is coming around tonight and we're all watching House of Cards. I've got Polyday stuff to do, and I've recently agreed to help out with some BiCon work too. I think I need to get a bit more organised.

Anyone know anything about washing machines? Is it possible that what looks like a failing waste water pump (when put on spin, water is sloshed about but none comes out of waste pipe, even when pipe is disconnected and I'm holding a bowl under the outlet) is actually something I can do something about, or should we just get a new one? I've checked the filter and it's clean; on the other hand there is a sound that might be something trying to pump, so maybe something is blocked.

I need a DIY icon. Now we have ear defenders and safety goggles, I'll have to get a photo of me drilling.

Right, off to sort out a service wash.

cheers!

If you're pretty confident it really is the pump, you can get them as spares. Washing machines in general are simple enough that you can just work out what's what and replace it. For spares, search the interwebs, particularly Partmaster (probably the best and most competent tentacle of the Dixons empire). Make sure any hoses are on very tightly, you may want to buy new hose clips as the ones used to make washing machines tend not to be springy enough to survive repeated opening/closing.

If you need a new pump and it turns out to be hard to source one let me know i have a decent supplier near to me who is good.
At this rate we may have to set up a goth house renovation/building community your the 3rd goth i know including my self who's doing this thing.
Any more out there?

Last time our washing machine wouldn't pump out a filter was blocked internally to the machine.

We have new jubilee clips that can be attached as tightly as you like, especially with a lovely electric screwdriver...

Hm - that machine should work, because my parents were using it until December. I would guess therefore that something's blocked, but know little beyond the basics of washing machines.

Washing machines are generally very simple. There's a drum, a rubber seal, a belt, a motor, some motor brushes, a pump, a control board and a big sod off breeze block.

It can be a cheap fix (I fixed a motor problem with some £20 carbon brushes), but if the fix cost is above 70-80 pounds and the machine is relatively new get someone in to fix it. An engineer usually costs about 70-80 quid, flat fee, and they will visit as many times as it takes to fix it (this may differ dependent on brand).

Modern machines are gradually becoming less reliable, as they move to using plastic drums, and remove the hot feed.

I love you and enjoy all your posts, but have you thought about a DIY filter? :) xxxx

OK first off check that you have removed the travelling bolts if they were fitted. You will find them on the back of the machine - my guess is they have been removed but it is always worth a check. Next check all the filters for a blockage. Thirdly some waste pipes have a safety valve fitted at the end so that you can unplug them and not get water everywhere; others (like ours) have this at the machine end. So check both ends and make sure it is fitted all the way in at the washing machine end and then look at the waste pipe end where you attach it under the sink.

Well done with all the moving stuff - can be very stressy!! Moving myself in a couple of weeks so the dreaded packing will have to start soon but I am putting it off for as long as possible.
