Apparently it's best to leave fridges/freezers to sit for a while before plugging them in anyway - something to do with the refrigerant needing to settle down again. I think the implication is that the system needs to do more work until it's all settled down, so uses more 'lectrickery and generates more heat.

No idea if that's actually true, mind you. :)
