As noted in those posts, there are domain-specific applications, e.g. within a small circle, or even a larger one like Debian. But Joe User isn't going to get the idea no matter how noxious the fanatics get.
Between the fanatics and the marketers, the concept didn't really have a hope.
(And I've forgotten the passphrase for the key in that third linked post and the email address it's hooked to is dead anyway. Lalalala! I protect my privacy by appearing to tell all about my life and actually not.)
