Actually the most important applications of crypto are to do with authentication rather than secrecy. In that context the "man in the middle" attack consists of saying "hey, I'm Bob, you believe me don't you?"
I think I understand the Web of Trust, I just think it's not much use. I really don't understand X.509, and I'm not entirely sure anyone else does either.
