What about Kerberos, and more recently Shibboleth? Shibboleth is being deployed throught the higher education sector.

In the open-source grid world, GSI has made some headway, but that's usually built on top of X.509 PKI.

I suppose that WS-Security / SAML / XACML etc. are just layers above these basic protocols?
