Your second para sounds about right, though the jury-rigged certificate format probably won't be SPKI - it'll probably be something more directly based on how Monotone works. It's not my plan to drag Monotone down with massive mission creep. On the other hand, the Monotone developers may simply find those tools so hateful they'll refuse to work with them.

If they do go for OpenPGP and SSL, that doesn't mean I can't pursue this branch too. I like your cross-certification idea - I still want the eventual result to be that all those standards wither and die to be replaced by something workable, but there's a good discussion to be had about how to get there from here.
