While this is at face value an argument between an atheist and a believer, I wonder whether there is also an element of the difference between the Jewish God and the Christian God. The Jewish God never claims to be lovey-dovey, He just requires that you obey him.
This reminds me of two lines from Woody Allen's sketch about God:
Reporter: But you are God's chosen people! Rabbi: This too we would like to ask Him about...
