Don't point apt at the sunsite.org.uk Debian mirror. It is way out of date. If ftp.uk.debian.org is down, try ftp.de.debian.org, which is giving me 46.3k/s at the moment.

The light above me, in the tiny cupboard I call a computer room, has always had dodgy wiring. Every few weeks, the bulb will die taking that entire lighting circuit with it; you have to re-engage the circuit breakers and replace the bulb.

I concluded recently it was probably the ceiling rose, and bought a new one at B&Q. Fortuituous really, because it went again this morning, so it was clearly time to do the repair.

When I took the old one off, one wire from the light flex was entirely loose - it must have been held in place by the cover! But the whole unit was a bit fucked, so I was right to replace it. And replace it I have, and it took well over an hour. I wish we had some Swarfega.

I'm going to see a friend who's an optimisation guru this afternoon, to discuss my ideas for a new stream cipher. I'll just have to resign myself to going with ceiling gunk under my fingernails and myriad small cuts. No actual blood sacrifice was made though - I wonder if this means the repair is cursed?

I don't seem to be receiving email at the moment. I'm trying to work out why just now - everything I've just looked at seems to be functioning OK. I'll update here when I know. Update: The mail daemon on my mail hub died mysteriously around 12:47 today. Restarted.
