Drinking at the Princess Louise in Holborn from about 8pm onwards tonight

I am becoming just slightly obsessive over planning for Saturday's scene with spikeylady and thinking through every last detail. Thinking about anything else is proving a challenge. Myself and ergotia even staged a little rehearsal of certain aspects of the scene last night, purely in the interests of getting it right you understand. I'm resisting the temptation to throw in morsels of what sort of planning because I don't want to spoil the surprise, but I think we're going to excel ourselves.

I can't find my hairbrush. I am eating a banana because I am writing this LJ when I should be making lunch. Update: found my hairbrush on the shelf next to the settee, had some soup and toast. Thanks ergotia!

For the record, I am absolutely not rallying behind our boys in any way. I do not believe that a US military adventure in Iraq will do the ordinary people of Iraq or any other country any good, whether or not it is blessed by the UN; the lack of UN sanction is important only insofar as it leaves no doubt that this is not being done for any of the stated reasons, but entirely for cynical purposes to do with politics and money. And it will serve only those purposes. Given the extent to which the Dubya administration has been practically working in cooperation with North Korea to clarify this for everyone, I'm amazed that not everyone sees it.

This war is about cheap oil and global domination. I dont want anyone of any nationality to die for that (thousands already die for that everyday, but as most of them are not white I guess they dont feel like kin) and I am not going to "get behind our boys" for any reason, whether emotional, intellectual or plain jingoistic sentimental.For the record.

Do you consider it your military people's fault that they are involved? We had our very unpopular war a generation ago, and the soldiers who came home were treated as pariahs for being part of it. As though they had made a choice to be there.

I'm ambivalent right now about the protests, even though I'm pretty unhappy with our administration.

I very much support the troops. It wasn't their failed diplomacy, and it wasn't their agenda. People join the military for myriad reasons, and they don't dictate where they go after.

If you mean Vietnam, there was a draft. I find it hard to support troops who weren't drafted, as they were stupid enough to sign up. I pity the stupid, and will try to support them if they want to get out of the stupid situation they've got themselves into, but if you sign up you ought to be bright enough to expect to get shot at.

Interesting question.

I certainly feel for the guys on the other side; they're mostly conscripts, and face amputation and worse for desertion or surrender.
And these guys are humans with families just like our guys are. And unfortuately for them they're fighting on the side that will lose. Hopefully quickly enough that fewer of them die than might if the war goes on longer.

I certainly don't agree with *their* administration's policies.

I guess... it's not my job to tell them I love them.

But the men and women on the allied side? I think it's very important to separate feelings about the war from feelings about the people who are part of it. I don't want anybody out there thinking, "the people at home hate me because I'm here."

The way the Vietnam vets were treated was shameful. It should not be repeated.

While I can't speak for the British troops I've heard nothing of American troops complaining that they're being shot at.

I do not consider joining the military to be stupid. But there's really no way to argue about matters of opinion.

On a gut level I agree with you, but I am reminded of the lad (partner) Dave knew at school; he was in trouble a lot and in the end he was given a choice between joining the army and being sent to borstal. Says a lot about the sort of people that the army wants!
