Alternatives to DBAM

This is an example of a mailing list which is gatewayed back and forth to the Web, so you can both read and post without using email. Do people think it's a suitable alternative for other web-based forums? Because it's apparently straightforward to implement using Mailman, which I have running locally.

Hmm... Looks ok, although personally I don't care about the mail element. What I always think about these things is how easy is it to customise? It would be really nice if the web forum could have a "censoring mode" that blocks out words that censorware objects to. Or replaces them with <img src="fword.png" ...>. It would also be nice to integrate slightly with LJ - if you use the same name in both it could pick up your picture & links to you profile etc.

Plus it has to be customisable becuase the colour scheme at Kanga is violently ghastly.

The first is easy; you just set up a "filter" in Apache using mod_perl.

The second is probably quite hard, and I would be tempted to start using this system first, and try to hack it in cool ways later if I got the time. It would indeed be cool but it would involve learning about the guts of both this system and LJ.

The third is easy.

All I mean is that if you indicate to DBAM2 that you are a livejournal user (hmmm... how?), then it adds some extra HTML to your posts that inserts your image and a link to your profile. Zero knowledge of the guts of LJ required (just as well, I downloaded it once and found it hard going for a perlophobe like me).

I wish more people would use NNTP for high-traffic discussion lists.

Know of an open-source Web-to-NNTP two-way gateway? If so, I could go for it.

In theory, anyway; I run "leafnode" locally, so I'd have to find a system to host it on with a real news system, ie C-news or INN.

Is there anyone who has a web browser but no newsreader?

Granted, most people don't know they have a newsreader, but you don't have to tell them...
