It's going to take a while to get used to the President being so goddamned sexy!

[identity profile] ciphergoth.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 09:35 am (UTC)(link)
I know - he looks more like a movie star!

[identity profile] runesandmen.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
Wow! I thought I was the only one who thought that! :)

[identity profile] nisaba.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
Ironic since we once had a movie star in the White House, but "sexy" is not a word that springs to mind there!

Thank goodness Arnie was born in Austria!

[identity profile] drdoug.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It makes it a lot harder, but it's not an entirely insuperable barrier, though.

[identity profile] wechsler.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Why not just annex Austria?

[identity profile] drdoug.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
*laughs* Yes! Historically that's gone well as a first step.

An armed invasion would present some logistical challenges. I'd imagine that current EU hosts of US bases would attempt to deny the US use of them for the purpose ... but probably only the UK would be in a position to enforce that, and we probably wouldn't try. Come to think of it, they could probably just move a few carrier groups in to the Adriatic and just tell Slovenia (and perhaps Italy) to STFU if they have a problem with it.

[identity profile] ciphergoth.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
How on Earth would they get enough Democratic support to put that one through?

[identity profile] drdoug.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Well they'd need to start with getting enough Republican support, which they haven't and are unlikely to, for the obvious reasons. I think it's safe to rule it out entirely for the duration of the 111th Congress. Arnie's not getting any younger, although he'd be in a better position to shrug off age/health worries than John wossissname* was. But I agree it's an absurdly remote possibility. Though theoretically possible, and strange turnarounds in events do happen.

(* I can't believe that McCain's name slipped from my mind there for a moment ... that's politics, as they say.)

McCain's name slipped from my mind there for a moment

That happened to me a few days ago. I was saying to myself "Palin and...? Palin and...?"

[identity profile] valkyriekaren.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
No thanks, I just ate.

All anyone has to do is point to Peru as an excellent example of why you don't let people who's allegiances are to foreign countries become your presidents...

That said, I do think the rule as it stands is totally jingoistic and should be removed (well, amended to be technically correct). Maybe something like 35 years of citizenship should be the requirement (though I realize that rule wouldn't quite work either).

*Edited as it didn't quite say what I meant...

heh, it's "Oval" :-)

And I loved the original joke, excellent!

[identity profile] lizw.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
I love that first photo - he looks so relaxed and yet attentive.

I prefer the version of that joke I first heard, where it's an old man going up to one of the Marines guarding the White House on three consecutive days, and when he delivers the last line, the Marine salutes him and says "See you tomorrow, sir."

[identity profile] drdoug.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a very good coda - will steal it for next time I repurpose the joke.

I can't believe how exciting I found those pictures, too.

He looks very regal.

I know people are wary of comparing Obama to JFK but these photos evoke the famous Time/Life photo essays from that administration.

"Suits you Sir" :)

That chair looks very comfortable indeed, but I bet that rather empty looking desk will fill up very fast indeed! Oh, and I hope he doesn't accidentally scratch the desk with pen-marks, might be a costly "you damage it, you pay for it" affair.
