Try my new trust metric!

I have implemented my new trust metric, and applied it (fairly crudely) to LiveJournal friends lists as an experiment. The result is a tool that tells you who is "closest" to your friends list who isn't actually on it, like "popwithfriends" but more sophisticated.

Who is closest to your friends list?

Let me know how plausible the results seem to you.

Update: Shit, I've broken the machine it was running on. Back later when I've made it check the load average before running the metric... Update: Back again now, with a rate limiter to keep the load average reasonable. Gosh, hadn't expected such popularity!

It won't work for me at all....timeouts, "still in progress", overloaded... :(

[identity profile] morgan-.livejournal.com 2003-07-31 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
No matter how hard I try, it doesn't work for me

[identity profile] hothwampa.livejournal.com 2003-07-31 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
well, i knew just about every name on the list.
most of them are from circles that i just would not choose to travel in, and dont have similar types on my list. so im not sure why those were weighted so much, whereas other types of people, there were only one or two of, but i am much more a part of that type of community and friendship on lj. it was interesting though.

Attempt to fetch info for pureblackrose failed: 500 Can't connect to www.livejournal.com:80 (Bad hostname 'www.livejournal.com'), died at /home/www/docs/trustflow/trustflow.pl line 261, line 2031.

Wah. ;_;

That was interesting, in #1 is my old screen name before I changed. #2 is my fiance whom I dont have on my friends list cuz I dont want him to know of my journal... And somewhere in there at #23 was a community I made another another name. And last but not least, #33 is someone I hate.

All in all, I only reconize 4 out of the 50, and 2 are because of my old name. Oh and lj_maintenance was #27. Pretty spooky, but kewl... I guess I got alot of journals to go check out now ^_^

-thumbs up-

"Attempt to fetch info for shadesong failed: Cannot calculate trust for someone with no friends listed (eg a community, nonexistant user), died at /home/www/docs/trustflow/trustflow.pl line 170. "

It reads your friends from your user info page. Because you have 591 friends, they aren't listed there, so it thinks you don't list any friends!

Interesting wart! I think it's too hard to fix it though :-(

Amazingly useful. Thanks.

I found this in [livejournal.com profile] thedramaking's journal. I can't get it to work for my name though. :(

[identity profile] tableforglasses.livejournal.com 2003-07-31 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
um, how long does it usually take to get the results? i've been waiting 15 minutes and nothing is coming up.

[identity profile] zhenzhi.livejournal.com 2003-07-31 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
that was fun! i found it through [Unknown site tag]

Looks like a cool toy, but it seems to be getting completely hammered, as any toy involving LJ 'friend' relationships will be!

Three times, I got 'Calculation for peganthyrus seems to have become stuck. Please reload to restart calculation.' before deciding to wait until the initial furor has died down...
ext_3468: Quark with a tribble on his head (Live Long & Prosper)

Pretty good stuff!

This is cool! This is almost like the LJ Browser thingie.

About 90% of the people on my list are members of [livejournal.com profile] sluggyfrelance, which is actually #13 on my list. I'm in [livejournal.com profile] misc_debris and about 90% of the people in [livejournal.com profile] misc_debris are also in [livejournal.com profile] sluggyfrelance (which I happen to not be a part of), so any Non-MD Sluggites would probably end up on that list.

I also found it funny that #35 and #36 on my list were [livejournal.com profile] news and [livejournal.com profile] paidmembers. :-D

[identity profile] firinel.livejournal.com 2003-07-31 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried it, and it said there was too much load on it, so I tried it a while later (more than 30 minutes, less than 3 hours- time flies when you're spodding) and I got something suggesting I reload it. When I reloaded it it, it told me it was still calculating, and to reload it, but not once every three seconds. *sheepish grin*

So I've yet to figure out what it does, but I'm a sucker for a submit button.

[identity profile] staraflur.livejournal.com 2003-07-31 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
This is really funny... I know who a lot of these people are. Was lots of fun, and did seem very plausible.

[identity profile] akseawolf.livejournal.com 2003-07-31 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I found this link through [livejournal.com profile] nerfcoyote's journal. It worked great. I recognized every single name on the list except #4.

[identity profile] neillparatzo.livejournal.com 2003-07-31 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Would love to try this, but yeah.

Any chance you could at least release this as a binary so we could use our own CPU time / bandwidth to figure it out instead of requiring yours?

[identity profile] andrajames.livejournal.com 2003-07-31 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I keep getting "Calculation for user Mandymandel has become Stuck. Please Reload"...
meh :-)

[identity profile] dreamwarrior.livejournal.com 2003-07-31 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
its not wroking....

interesting

[identity profile] icanreadyourmnd.livejournal.com 2003-07-31 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
some I knew from being friends of friends ... some I knew from having been friended and defriended from my own journal and some I don't know at all but will probably check out.

[identity profile] rainbow-goddess.livejournal.com 2003-07-31 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I knew many of the names on the list because they're users that are actually friended in the journals I made for my cats. :)

However, the person who's first on the list is not someone I would friend. I've read this person's journal because they friended me, and did not find anything in it of interest to me.

Now to the good part: I found some users to add to my friend list. I really like this program.

nice work

[identity profile] crysofdark.livejournal.com 2003-08-01 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I recognised most names, so it seems a good thing. :) yay for fun'ness

[identity profile] desertcoyote.livejournal.com 2003-08-01 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Found it on a friend's list, and it seems very accurate- I know (of) a lot of these people...

[identity profile] rev-jo.livejournal.com 2003-08-01 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
i knew most of the people that it came up with, about 98% of them i regard with disgust or apathy..there are on some of my friends' lists though. neat little prog...

[identity profile] rechan.livejournal.com 2003-08-01 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I found it inaccurate atleast to a slight degree. The first person on my results had only one person who is currently on my friends list on it.

[identity profile] pugwash.livejournal.com 2003-08-01 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely excellent - I have added about half a dozen people I didn't even know were on LJ!
