Try my new trust metric!

I have implemented my new trust metric, and applied it (fairly crudely) to LiveJournal friends lists as an experiment. The result is a tool that tells you who is "closest" to your friends list who isn't actually on it, like "popwithfriends" but more sophisticated.

Who is closest to your friends list?

Let me know how plausible the results seem to you.

Update: Shit, I've broken the machine it was running on. Back later when I've made it check the load average before running the metric... Update: Back again now, with a rate limiter to keep the load average reasonable. Gosh, hadn't expected such popularity!

Got this off a friend's journal. It's a brilliant thing, well done!

Found reading LJ.... giggles

I just tried this thing cuz i saw it in someone elses journal. it seems to have been fairly accurate

=/ Well.....

Since I have only 2 friends on my list and they are friends it didn't do too much for me, but I suppose the avg user with say... 10+ friends might find it neater. Maybe I just need more friends. =0

Very nice and useful. The only addition I could think off of the top of my head was adding a weighting to the results. Sure X is number 10 on my list, but is that because they were found from 10 friend's journals or just 1? Thinks like that. Just placement in a list can make it hard to find the knee in the curve.

That was a lot of fun! Thanks for coming up with that.

I think it's a great idea...

[identity profile] happypete.livejournal.com 2003-08-03 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
but I haven't been able to try it yet. Administrative suggsetion: cache lookups (if you haven't already) so data related to any given user is only retrieved once a day at most; queue lookups--so if, say, I try to get my results, and I get the "too busy" message, my request is queued up, and when load decreases, deferred requests are computed (and cached) on a FIFO basis...

Re: I think it's a great idea...

[identity profile] ciphergoth.livejournal.com 2003-08-03 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Did all that except the queue. It's not clear that the queue would actually mean significantly more people got to use it; it would just get backed up until it had a month's work ahead of it in a day. Plus it's annoying to implement...`

The only thing I noticed that I would change is that several entries are communities, some of which I am a member of but don't list on my friends list but people I know do

[identity profile] bibliophile0614.livejournal.com 2003-08-03 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
I am finding it super frustrating that it never works for me! I've been trying for over 2 days!

[identity profile] wring.livejournal.com 2003-08-03 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
I LOFF IT!

[identity profile] perkygoth.livejournal.com 2003-08-03 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
mine never works.

Nifty!

*shudders*

Urgh. Urgh. You got my ex on there! And an ex-best-friend, and loads of people I know who I just haven't got round to adding yet. It's very, very good - but I think I'll leave my ex off my friends list, thanks!

[identity profile] melskunk.livejournal.com 2003-08-03 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and it worked very well. Again, most of the people were known to me and not on my list for a reason, but a few were new or people I didn't know had an LJ

[identity profile] keye.livejournal.com 2003-08-03 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
Found this on a friend's journal. Very interesting. Thank you!

[identity profile] paddyobrien.livejournal.com 2003-08-03 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I just got the link from people on IRC, so I wanted to try it out.

[identity profile] cherrycity.livejournal.com 2003-08-03 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this is a really good idea.
I've always wanted another system in livejournal, so I could add people to my list that I know, but I don't like to read their journals everyday in my friendslist, so it would be a way of keeping track of people, and having the option to remember and check in on their journal every once in awhile.

As for the results, more were people that I knew of from another community that I went to, so many people shared friends.

[identity profile] grissecon.livejournal.com 2003-08-03 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Found this through my friends list. Very cool, now I now who I should be adding to my friends (about half of my results were visited links).

[identity profile] celaeno.livejournal.com 2003-08-03 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Found it from [profile] pilarcruz, and thought it was very accurate. Nice job :)

[identity profile] halloweencake.livejournal.com 2003-08-03 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
its not working. it keeps on not working for me.

[identity profile] pantryslut.livejournal.com 2003-08-03 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Got here via [Unknown site tag]. It was fun! Most are people I don't know, but they look interesting.

Several people on my friendslist tried it, so I decided to be a lemming... There's a lot of overlap with the "popular amongst your friends" thing though in a slightly different order, but there are also a few people not on that list, and some whom I have never seen previously.

if i've got it right...

[identity profile] petitesoeur.livejournal.com 2003-08-03 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
it takes your lj friend's friends list whips it around with your interests & their interests and then viola out pops a list of potential friends of your friends.

so it would seem to be the lj version of "friendster." a kinda 6 degrees of separation thing.

hmmmmmmm... i already pop over to the friends list of my friends & check out their ljs -- particularly if someone has been commenting on an entry that i've been pontificating. also have surfed thru the people who pop up when one clicks on a linked interest. so i've kinda already been there & done that -- added those who seemed to be someone with whom i shared more than a friend & a few interests -- which is to say that my interest in someone else's journal entries are the most powerful incentive for me to ask them to become my lj friend.

but i did find a couple of cool groups to join & some interesting people on those groups to contact.

i'm always up for letting the computer system crunch the numbers.

summation: it was useful & neat.

thank you
