Illness, snow, blog

Am off work with a cold. [livejournal.com profile] lovelybug also has this cold. Doubtless [livejournal.com profile] bathtubgin will soon be infected. I have spent the whole day in my pyjamas, dressing gown and monster slippers, looking at the snow through the window and lying on the floor playing SSX Tricky, which I am now far too good at.

[livejournal.com profile] booklectic persuaded me that I should start a proper blog, but the technical work is easier than the actual writing work! It finally has exactly one proper entry: a discussion of Jerry Coyne's book review on theistic evolution and convergent evolution. Hopefully it won't sit there lonely for too long.

Heh awesome :).

I think I'm going to do the same, since recently I've been motivated to post more about politics etc. Can't think of a name though :/.

Mine is called "Paul Crowley's Blog".

Yeah, but I want it to be anonymous! And I don't want it to be too connected with my LJ either.

Are you going to set up a syndicated feed for LJ? :)

Oh and sorry you're ill - no worries if you need to cancel date on Sat!

Wow, thanks! And thanks for commenting!

My pleasure!

Admittedly, I am loving this image. ;-)

[identity profile] ciphergoth.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
By "monster" I do not mean that they are large; I mean that they are covered with grey fur and have three large black talons sticking out. They were a present from [livejournal.com profile] lovelybug's parents.

[identity profile] weegoddess.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Strangely (or perhaps not so strangely), I had assumed exactly that. I guess that 'monster' means to me just what it's supposed to in this context.

(maybe Yanks don't use the word 'monster' to mean 'big'. At least, this one doesn't)

[identity profile] vvalkyri.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't. :) I was assuming monster feet.

Hope you both/all feel better soon.
That is, as has been said, an adorable mental image, though.

[identity profile] lovelybug.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It is quite cute :)

Nice opener. I look forward to more.

I've gone the other way and tried to make my LJ into a proper blog: thanks to various Python scripts, I have comment feeds and I send out pingbacks/trackbacks to other blogs I link to (though I don't get them when people link to me, as LJ is advertising a pingback URL but doesn't appear to do anything with pings).

Admittedly, it might be easier just to set up a "proper" blog that'd do all this stuff for me, but I'd be a little worried that my existing commenters wouldn't follow me there, and I would see fewer interesting discussions as a result (as seems to happen when people flounce to Dreamwidth, for example).

[identity profile] ciphergoth.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to confess, it's almost entirely a status thing. People don't consider LJ blogs to be "proper" blogs in the same way - if I want to get smart people I don't personally know commenting, moving it off LJ seems to be a prerequisite. Stupid and annoying, but I'm not a great believer in shouting at the tide.

[identity profile] lizw.livejournal.com 2010-01-07 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I've run into this problem as well, but I find the LJ interface so much better for this kind of interaction that I've decided anyone who doesn't think it's "proper" can just sod off. Comment threading and notification in particular work so much better on LJ that I can rarely be bothered to try to sustain a conversation on a non-LJ-based blog (though I'll try to make an exception for yours, especially if you keep posting interesting stuff about religion and atheism!)

Yay

I suspect you will want some kind of are-you-human checker for comments soon enough.

I expect you're right. It seems to be a pretty flexible and powerful blogging platform though, so I'm sure it supports something. And for small blogs, tests like "tick this box to comment" usually suffice, so long as they're not standardized...

Bah to colds
Get well soon xxx
