Lib Dem leadership elections

Am I right in thinking that the next leader of the Liberal Democrats will be chosen by single transferable vote?

I expect so.

Yes. Some people would read it as AV, which is the same process for a single-seat election.

Yes. I haven't yet been able to ascertain whether or not there will be a "Re-Open Nominations" option, but I will happily report back once I get the voting paper.

There won't. There wasn't last time we elected a leader and the changes to the rules on internal elections recently didn't relate to leadership elections.

RON is a bugger in STV, as a general aside. How many RONs can you elect, etc. But that may be a bit electoral-systems-geek of me.

So where's the campaign to use a Condorcet method instead?

But if you use condorcet you might end up with no leadership at all...

[i'll leave the obvious punchline to that one as an easy exercise for the reader, and say that as we back STV for all elections it's only consistent that we use it for all our internal elections]

(1) many Condorcet methods (eg MAM) will always pick a winner.

(2) STV is good for multi-winner elections, but bad for single-winner elections. If you back STV for single-winner, you should stop it!

I'd sign up for such a campaign, but I am too lacking in time, energy and party clout to start one.

Surely that isn't a problem in a single-seat election, though?
