Reichstag Fire

This pivotal event in the rise of the Nazis to power isn't well known enough: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reichstag_fire

Good thing nothing like that could happen today really.

Goring: "the opera seemed to me much more important than the Reichstag"

Huh. Now, is that rabbit-hole sarcasm?

Standard [livejournal.com profile] ciphergoth sarcasm, I thought ;)

Interesting to see where arsonists consider the seat of government to reside these days, isn't it?

Thats scarily close to recent events....

I have to respectfully disagree. Although the Reichstag Fire was an important and crucial aspect of the Nazis rise to power, the appointment of Hitler to the post of Chancellor on 30 January 1933 was the pivotal event. Otherwise, Hitler wouldn't have had the ability to declare a state of emergency or encourage the Reichstag Fire Decree which ultimately led to the Enabling Act and further.

Sort of like the US Presidential election of 2000.

I don't mean to imply that it's *the* pivotal event, just that it's *a* pivotal event and one that deserves to be better known...

Ah, okay. In that case I agree completely.

I can see how I misread your post now -- I shouldn't comment when I'm in a rush! Sorry about that.

Sorry, I could no longer hold myself back.

"Did I say red?"

1) the right to assembly is guaranteed by the Constitution
2) so are free speech and freedom of/from religion, which by themselves makes all this stupid marriage prejudice unconstitutional. Um, like, the 1700's with nuclear weapons? It's not about religion. It's about equality --damn it. And that is exactly what the Nazis didn't want. They wanted dictatorships in all its racist prejudice religiously fanatic purity. Who said they could try again here, with liberty and justice for all?

I'd like to start a German restaurant called Ye Olde Reichstag Fire, and make it in the shape of the WTC. (http://www.livejournal.com/users/warpsmith/139343.html)
