Off to Starbucks

Off to Starbucks, to run away from distractions and get some work done.

I'll try not to twist my ankle this time. The half-the-weight laptop should help.

PS: some interesting comments on crowd estimation. And Google has bought a blog company.

*sighs*...

Drink an evil corporate globalised lovely tasty expensive hot chocolate for me whilst you're there... it's certainly nicer than the hot chocolate we can get downstairs.

Then again, our hot chocolate is 20p...

I was trying to do a crowd estimate while i was on the train back from London, and i could only get something like 80,000. Not sure what i was doing wrong but it was very obviously a wrong value, because this one was more densely packed and louder and longer than a 500,000-strong one i'd been on before. Trouble is i was going on numbers numbers and estimates made as one person inside the crowd (i.e. the first person set off at 12, which i gather they didn't, the route i think went down that way *bit of string + A-Z*, we saw the end get to Hyde Park at about 6:00, everyone travelled at the same speed all the way through, etc.) which probably weren't all that accurate at all.

Must look at the site on how to estimate a moving crowd at some point. ~wonders if stat mech would work for a big enough sample~
