Big bag of updates

  • My ears are feeling a lot better - thanks to everyone who asked!
  • Remember we're having a party on Saturday!
  • and it's .conception on Sunday.
  • My digicam broke when I tried to photograph the giraffes in Amsterdam Zoo; it lost the ability to focus, and later it couldn't retract the lens at all. Yesterday I collected the replacement from the camera shop. I have photography again, yay!
  • Also, my MP3 player broke *again*. That means that I've lost all the MP3s I ripped for it, and many of the photos that I and others took in Italy. The Florence lot are OK, but I don't have the fab photo of [livejournal.com profile] kboyd in a swimsuit that I was so looking forward to. Boo!
  • I had a good weekend. Thanks for a fab party, [livejournal.com profile] gothtart and [livejournal.com profile] vacant_!
  • Tonight [livejournal.com profile] pavlos is coming around I think. Tomorrow I shall go to the pub. Thursday I'm seeing [livejournal.com profile] calar. Friday [livejournal.com profile] ergotia and [livejournal.com profile] lilithmagna arrive, all being well.
  • I've been discussing trust metrics some more; if you're interested in this sort of thing join the [livejournal.com profile] trustmetrics community, since it's a bit lonely being the only member...
  • I have upgraded my main machine (which is both server and the box I sit at) to Debian 3.0. And I now use Galeon as my main browser. It rocks so very very hard.
  • Whitby soon! yay! must wash some clothes.
  • Jeffery Archer is still in prison.

I don't know if Pavlos knows that he's coming round :-) Have you heard from him?

Careful what you photograph next time. It's only a consumer model!

In my self-appointed role as Social Secretary, I would suggest you check about ergotia arriving Friday night: I understood that she was going to be in London on Saturday morning.

Have a good party, by the way! Will we see you for simondraycott's birthday/David and Liz's commitment?

Indeed, I am not setting off until Saturday, as Simon is having his nipple pierced and I cannot miss that :) I made him move the appointment to the unfeasibly early hour of 10.30 am and intend to jump on a train pretty soon after that. Cant wait!

Backups?

The player broke before I got it home.

And the 2002 edition of "How to win friends and influence people" will have a section about not asking people who've just suffered data loss whether they have backups.

True, but you've done it to me in the past too.

It was having to learn much more about the internal structure of PageMaker data files than anyone outside Adobe should have to know that convinced me that if I want to keep something, it's on at least two different forms of media, ideally in separate locations.

If that means buying more flash cards for a camera, rather than wiping them once the photos have been transferred, so be it.

The people I really feel sorry for are those who expect their inkjet printouts of their priceless photos to last and who have wiped the files.

Wish I could come up for the party (and conception sounds interesting) but I'm at a baby-warming on Sunday! Hope y'all have fun!

Could I casually remind you about your apache book - that is if it's still OK for me to borrow it for a while?

(I'd be happy to return it to your party at the weekend, I can't imagine it'll take that long to read).

[identity profile] ciphergoth.livejournal.com 2002-10-02 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, not sure I'm going to lug the book all the way to the restaurant, sorry!

That's OK .. I missed the mealy bit and assumed you were just gonna jaunt to the pub directly.
