Made it back. Got a bit depressed on the train back in a pessimistic sort of way; I'll try and write up some thoughts if I feel up to it. But very glad to be home.

Y!M doesn't seem to be working for me any more. "unable to sign on: unable to read". I have no idea what that means.

try reinstalling gaim. or using the machine's ip number instead of its name (don't ask me why, but one of my other friends lost all access to AIM and Y!M yesterday and fixed at least the AIM bit by using the IP number instead).

When you mean re-install, you mean overwrite the binaries? I just checked (by doing a duplicate install to /tmp/gaim-test) and they're OK. I also tried moving my .gaim* files out of the way and re-creating, didn't help either.

In which dialog do I use an IP number rather than a name?

i would guess you've fixed the problem by now, since you appeared to be online when i looked a couple of minutes ago. if not, go to the tools menu, and select accounts. when the account editor window appears, select your aim identity, then click on modify. pick the oscar options tab and the host is listed there.

of course, it might help if, when replying to things at 05h00 when i can't sleep, i actually re-read what the problem is rather than assuming it's the same one that's been afflicting other people.

s/aim identity/y!m identity/ and s/oscar options/yahoo options/ in the above witterings. and it's only your aim self i can see online, not your y!m self.
